Botswana

In 2008 Leon (Spyker) Joubert was fortunate to be able to secure a 500,000-acre plains game concession in south eastern Botswana. The property itself is nestled along the banks of the Limpopo River, the river marking the border of Botswana and South Africa.

Getting here can happen two ways. You may choose to fly in to Johannesburg and then be driven the six to seven hours to the camp. Or, you can choose to fly into the capital of Botswana, Gaborone, and then drive 90 minutes or so into camp. The camp itself is thatched cottages, with electricity run several hours a day with the use of a generator. Of course hot/cold running water is available 24-hours per day.

This is a plains game Nirvana. No fences come into play here. When you leave in the early morning hours there’s a better than good chance you won’t see the lodge again until after dark. In this expansive land you will experience the true wilds of Africa where even the PHs use GPS devices, and yet where a hot shower and fine dining await you each and every night.

Expect a somewhat sandy terrain with scrub mopane, leadwood and acacia woodlands dominating the landscape. There will also be granite outcroppings, steep river gorges, and in these rivers gorges expect the vegetation to be more than a bit thick.

Normal high temperatures from April through September average in the high 70s during the day and little if any rain can be expected. Nights will drop into the lower 40s. Frost is not out of the question.
